Sony's disabling of Linux on the PS3 has made many people very angry, some more so than others, but for an enthusiast named madshaun1984 it was something of a call to arms. He didn't file a lawsuit or whine about it in forums -- oh no...

He sat down to get XBMC working and has succeeded, albeit slowly. Right now the CellSDK that this build relies upon is not up to snuff performance-wise, so just scrolling through media is somewhat less than fun and you can forget about playing it. But, the hope is to improve that and to turn the PS3 into a proper media-streaming Linux box... so long as you don't update the firmware, anyway.

Full instructions on how to do this are at the source link, but be prepared to spend the better part of an afternoon at it if you want to try yourself. For those not ready for that kind of commitment (or anyone who already has the latest firmware) you can just enjoy the video proof after the break.

For those doubting the thought that went into this, take a listen: the Blue Power Cell accurately reflects how much power you have left, and the Thrower has been designed to covertly hold both the Wiimote and the Nunchuk. Better still, the Wiimote's internal speaker enables the pack to make true-to-film noises. Laut Golem sei der DSi LL
21,2 Millimeter dick (DSi bislang: 18,9),
16,1 Millimeter breit (DSi: 13,7) und
9,44 Millimeter hoch (DSi: 7,49).
Das Gesamtgewicht inklusive des Touch Pen stiege um genau 100 Gramm auf
314 Gramm. Die Batterie soll bei mittlerer Helligkeit neun bis elf Stunden statt sechs bis neun Stunden durchhalten; die Ladezeit steigt laut Nintendo um durchschnittlich eine halbe Stunde auf drei Stunden.

In Europa soll der neue DSi unter dem Namen DSi XL verkauft werden. Preis und genaues Verkaufsdatum stehen noch nicht fest. Es wird aber mit durchschnittlich 15 Euro mehr vom DSi Preis ausgehend zu rechnen sein. Nintendo signalisierte erste Europalieferungen für das 1. Quartal 2010.

Feels nice when a company keeps its promises, doesn't it? Nintendo said it'd have the newly bulked up DSi LL out in Japan for November 21, and shockingly enough that's exactly what's happened.

Eager Japanese upgraders have today gotten their mitts on the 4.2-inch (both screens, of course) device, while similarly inclined European and American Nintendo lovers are once again left to envy from afar. Their helping of jumbo DSi, to be known as the XL, will be showing up some time in the first quarter of 2010, long after bragging rights and gift-giving holiday occasions have passed.
